Sailing orders and letters, 1789-1799.

Papers consist of Brown's sailing orders and letters to captains of his vessels and letters from Brown in Newbury (Mass.) to Ward & [Langdon], merchants of Wilmington (N.C.). Papers include five sailing orders to captains of Brown's vessels which instruct them to sail for Charleston (S.C.), sell their cargo, and contact local merchants to acquire freight for transport to Europe, with directions for the selling of cargo. Appended to the orders are instructions as to which flags to fly and in what sequence for proper identification at the entrance of Charleston harbor. Captains named include William Russell, Henry Lamb, William Picket, John Moulton, and E. Mayhew. Four letters to merchants Ward & [Langdon] concern the repair of a ship in Charleston (S.C.), shipping orders for picking up rice in Charleston, and arrangements with Ward & [Langdon] for the delivery and loading of cargo including tar and naval stores.
